SHOULD the disused Woodhead railway tunnel, currently set to be used for carrying electricity cables under the Pennines, be preserved for future rail use, and should the Woodhead line between Sheffield and Manchester be reopened to provide additional capacity?
"If we are going to try and get some of the heavy loads off the roads onto the railways, I think we should leave Woodhead Tunnel as a railway tunnel and look towards a better railway travel and logistics system for the future."
Kevan Smith, aged 51, Manor.

"It would be highly beneficial to have a high-speed rail link to Manchester, the West Coast and Liverpool.
"I cannot believe this hand to mouth decision.
"The Woodhead route is much more high speed than the Hope Valley one to the south - that's why it was electrified.
"It used to be half an hour by express to Manchester in the 1960s."
Richard Roper, aged 58, Gleadless.

"It would be beneficial if it meant extra trains between Sheffield and Manchester. Isn't it the trend now to get everyone on public transport? this can only help."
Peter Charles, aged 50, Hillsborough.

"I think it is imperative that we use all possible means of transport available to us. Anything that improves getting across the Pennines whether it be by road or rail has got to be good.
"Since de-nationalisation of the railways this Labour government has done nothing to improve them, regardless of what they imply.
"It was not helped by the fact that Prescott was put in charge. Hopefully, this will instigate some sort of improvement for both passengers and business between Yorkshire and Lancashire."
Chris Lingard, aged 58, Hillsborough.

"Woodhead and all inter-city high speed links should be available."
Eric Shaw, aged 64, Rotherham.

"I think that the tunnel should be kept for rail use, my reason for this is probably a large lump of nostalgia as this was the route I used to return to Ireland right up to it closing.
"As I really don't know enough about the logistics of running the railways, I'm not sure if this would be a viable option or not. I feel that a lot of people may be wanting to keep it open for the same reasons as myself."
Mollie Hickman, aged 65, Handsworth.
