Published Date: 19 December 2007
Has Sir Bob Kerslake done a good job in his 10 years at Sheffield Council.
"My concern is what he will do to the Housing and Communities Agency, which will presumably control council housing and his policies will be disastrous to social housing.

"He was headhunted to turn around the city's finances after the unfortunate affairs of the World Student Games and Supertram, from Hounslow, where he had done a similar job.

"His policies in Sheffield have been a disaster and the whole development of the city skewed, built around attracting 'Inward Investment', with the catastrophic New Retail Quarter, redevelopment of the Moor with the 900 student flats, messing up of Devonshire Green, building on the markets car park and a hotel in the wrong place, closure of the main markets - which really affects me - luxury flats on places like Gleadless Common, which also really annoys me, as it is just up the road.

"A vast array of luxury flats and flats for students over a vast area of Sheffield in the ring road area, all violating planning theory and confining students to unsuitable flats and, in an unsuitable area, a tower next to the Peace Gardens.

"Worst of all, demolition of 8,000 houses and dwellings to take part in John Prescott's programme of demolishing them all over the North to keep up housing prices and show 'recovery'.

"Jan Wilson's brother-in-law campaigned against this. As soon as this was completed we had the present housing crisis.

"What are we supposed to do? Have the Munchkins dance in the Peace Gardens and hold a party?"
Richard Roper, aged 58, Gleadless.

"Don't really know much about Sir Bob. He seems to be one of these people who is in the background unless there is a photo shoot. Some people like him and what he has done for the city of Sheffield and some don't.

"I think the appearance of the city centre and around the railway station has improved but, on the other hand, there have been some really substantial job cuts during his period as Chief Executive.

"I think the bus situation has a long way to go before improvements if any will be noticed, the roads are generally in a state of disrepair, housing is being sold off to housing associations and there have been some big mistakes made such as allowing the McDonald St Paul's Hotel to be sold off at a massive profit with nothing going to the council.

"On the whole I am proud to be a Sheffielder and I am pleased with the way the city is improving so on the whole I would say Sir Bob has done a good job but I think I would for £180,000 per annum.

"Can I take this opportunity to wish The Star jury members and readers a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year."
Kevan Smith, aged 50, Manor.

Now have your say. Post your comments below.

"We are very lucky to have had someone so committed to the revival of the city. Sheffield is a much better place than it was 10 years ago and Sir Bob has played a big part, along with Labour Council Leader Jan Wilson."
Karl Hallam, aged 37, Millhouses.

"He left the London borough in a mess to come to Sheffield; Hounslow is still in a mess, similar to how he will leave Sheffield. The man is a political animal."
James Smith, aged 73, Stocksbridge.

"It seems ironic that Bob Kerslake is given a top Westminster job responsible for housing throughout the UK when he has demolished so many homes here in Sheffield."
Peter Charles, aged 50, Hillsborough.

Miss Informed,

R kerslake brought politics into his job. He has worked for the Labour Party for years.Chief Executuves should be non-political to ensure fairness for all of the Sheffield areas. He has poured millions into strong labour areas what difference has it made? Over the last 10 years all the departments he was responsible for have in my estimation gone backwards. I have been out of pocket each of the last ten years. It will be interesting to see what his salary will be from tax payers money? No I don't think he has earned his £180,000

Rodgers,

Get rid of this lunatic and quick. He is unelected and he thinks he runs our city. He is one corrupt man and like many others I stick by this accuzation.
