What are your views on the case of British teacher Gillian Gibbons, who and has been jailed for 15 days and could have faced 40 lashes for inciting hatred and insulting religion, while working in Sudan?
Her crime was letting children in her class name a teddy bear 'Mohammed'.
"Although I would prefer this kind of thing did not even make it into the public eye, what I would say is, the lady is supposedly an intelligent women living in a country with a strong religious culture; it might be a good idea to do some research ne
xt time."
Peter Smith, aged 27, Hillsborough.

"It's despicable that the Sudanese has treated this generous, giving woman in such a way.

"Once again, are we to believe the Islamic faith as being understanding, caring and good to others. Not me, I'm afraid. And, as for the British Foreign Office, can anyone tell me what they actually do?"
Peter Charles, aged 50, Hillsborough.

"This is clearly a case of persecuting an innocent person and an incredibly foolish incident over a teddy bear.

"However, it is clear the Sudanese government is getting back at Britain and creating a hostage.

"Blair tried to overthrow the Sudanese government and even invade, whilst Brown has openly issued bloodcurdling threats to the Sudanese government."
Richard Roper, aged 58, Gleadless.

"A British teacher goes to a foreign country to teach their children. Allows one of them to name a teddy bear after himself and ends up being thrown in prison and facing a possibility of forty lashes, prison or a fine if convicted of blasphemy.

"No, it's not a film, this is the uncivilised world of the Sudan. I need to be very careful how I answer this as I am not and have never been a racist but what has happened is beyond belief.

"The Sudanese who come to Great Britain and choose to break our laws must think they are in Disneyland with how soft our justice system has become and the support of the PC brigade.

"I hope the British government intervene and bring her home as soon as possible if that is what she chooses to do."
Kevan Smith, aged 50, Manor.

What do you think? Post your comments below.

"It seems ridiculous to suggest that naming a teddy bear Mohammed is inciting hatred - who against?

"It might have been a silly mistake to make but suggesting that it is offensive to a religion to name a toy after millions of its adherents (named after the prophet in the first place) is just nonsense.

"It's probably just sabre-rattling by the Sudanese government after increased pressure from London over Darfur and I hope (and expect) that Gillian Gibbons will be freed soon."
Rob McIlveen, aged 26, Crookes.

"My view is that Gillian Gibbons should have taken into account the extremist views of the country she is domiciled."
James Smith, aged 73, Stocksbridge.

"I think she should come home as soon as possible. She went out there to help them and gets punished as a reward."
Ann Lawrenson, aged 60, Firth Park.

Isn't this just another example of what Islam and sharia law is all about?

Interesting that we allow Islamic extremists to revile any other religion than Islam in the name of free speech. This vile culture has to be curtailed in its efforts to destroy all other cultures than the Sharia culture it emboddies. It is time to take off the gloves and deal with this extremist terrorism head on. This teacher allowed the children in her class free speech, and the child proudly chose the word Mohammed as the name for the Teddy Bear. Given the argument of the extremist the child could face serious punishment for allowing his name to be used. How daft can you get.

just when you think people can't get any more petty and ridiculous we get a woman who let CHILDREN name a bear thrown in prison.maybe it should be the parents of the children in jail for not teaching their children that they live in a country whose culture borders on the insane. how about British muslims protest in vast numbers on behalf of this woman whose only crime is trying to help a 3rd world country.

1st of all, my sympathy goes out to the whole family. 2nd, if the boot was on the other foot, things would be totally different. There would be uproar & demonstrations in other countries. Why is it that we are always the bad people/country? Why should we have to change. This was the naming of a teddy bear for christ sake. Ok it was a the name to give to a TEDDY BEAR, but to put this lady & her family through hell, in this way, is disgusting. It's totally the wrong way to go about this. My thoughts are with you.
