Should Peter Pickering, who abducted and murdered Barnsley schoolgirl Shirley Boldy 35 years ago, ever be released?
"NO! NO! NO! People who commit these sorts of crime should never be released.
"We have three daughters aged 31, 17 and 21 months and if someone ever did this to one of our girls, I would be very scared of how I would react.
"I don't know how the
families who have these crimes committed against them cope with the aftermath but all we seem to be concerned about is the welfare of the criminal.
"Where would he live and how would the people in that neighbourhood feel? They would be forever wondering if he was going to strike again. I know I would be."
Kevan Smith, aged 50, Manor.

"It's a tough call whether to release someone after so long. It's impossible to know for sure whether he is a threat to the public still, yet it is tempting to say that a crime so horrible deserves a proper life sentence - i.e. life in jail."
Rob McIlveen, aged 26, Crookes.

"Life should mean life, he should never be released from prison."
James Smith, aged 73, Stocksbridge.

"No, I don't think the chap who has murdered the young girl should be released from prison. In my opinion, if this chap has murdered once before, there is every chance he could murder again."
Jane Coulston, aged 47, Crookes.

"No, I do not think he should be released; you find these people often reoffend."
Ann Chesney, aged 60, Sheffield Lane Top.

"Peter Pickering should have been hung by his neck, as should all murderers of children."
Eric Shaw, aged 64, Rotherham.

No, definitely not, he never should be set free!! I went to Wombwell High School and can remember this happening. Peter Pickering should never be released. I came to know (slightly) Shirley's mother through my job. She was a lovely lady who was brave enough to carry on and live her life without showing the horror on her face, she must have carried that horror to the end. A person like him will never change and if he does change, well he will have to live with it for all the grief he caused to Shirleys family.
