STEELERS say they have the most under-rated player in the British Elite League on their roster.
And Doug Sheppard's successful maiden season at the Arena last year fully justified the decision to make him player-assistant coach.
So says Sheffield general manager Mike O'Connor, who says bringing the Canadian from Basingstoke Bison was one of the smartest bits of business the club has done in years.
"Doug knows the league, is good for 30 goals or so and is a calculated, intelligent and studious player," said O'Connor.
"He is very strong offensively and does the most incredible things with the puck. He does the little things right to make a pass or avoid a hit. Defensively, he is pretty gritty too and is seldom caught out.
"As an assistant coach he knows the game very well.
"And he complements Dave Matsos (head coach) very well in terms of tactics and strategy."
O'Connor said the dressing room respect for Sheppard - who will be 32 Saturday - was obvious.
"He will be a key asset to us next season when we launch our assault on the league title."
