BACK-UP goalie Davey Lawrence today quit Sheffield Steelers and is likely to sign for English Premier League side Swindon Wildcats
The Sheffield second-string could be replaced by Basingstoke Bison's six-footer, Dan Green.

The former England Under-18 netminder is known to fancy a move after three seasons in Hampshire.

Barnsley-born Lawrence had few opportunities to shine for Steelers last season.

He was bitterly disappointed in his own form in a key Challenge Cup Final first leg against Notting-ham Panthers in January when Jody Lehman was unavailable - he conceded six goals and Steelers' arch rivals rivals went on to lift the trophy.

Teammates absolved him of responsibility, but it left a cloud over him.
Now he wants a clean break, after six years at Broughton Lane.
Today, Steelers general manager Mike O'Connor said: "I can't think of a better servant.

"He was a local lad and everyone at the club had a soft spot for Davey. He is such a top-class lad and he will be missed by us all.

"Davey approached David Matsos (coach) and confirmed that he would like to try to get a job as a starter in the EPL.

"We are certainly not going to stand in his way and wish him all the very best in his future.

I don't think Davey has played his last game for Steelers. A few years away playing lots of games in the EPL will only help his development as a goalie.

"Davey has a lot of experience and has played with some of the great Steelers goalies like Ryan Bach, Joel Laing, Christian Bronsard and Jody Lehman.

"He will always be welcome back here at the Arena."
