STEELERS' second string goalie Davey Lawrence hot the career break
he was looking for today.
The 23-year-old Barnsley-born netminder, who decided to quit the Elite League to get more ice time away from import competition, has signed for Telford Tigers.
He will compete with home-grown hero Daniel Heslop for a spot on
between the posts.
Te
lford Coach Claude Dumas, an ex Steelers winger, said : "Heslop is
a player we know very well.
"For the last two or three years he has signed expecting to be the
back-up goalie, or sharing the duties, but circumstances have made
him our regular netminder - and in each case he did the job for us.
""We were looking for another goalie to partner Hessie. We knew we
wanted someone with quality, and we knew there are not many of them
to go around.
"Lawrence has played in the Elite league with Sheffield Steelers for
many years, but now wants to come to the EPL for more ice time.
"He has played for the GB juniors and the thing I remembered most
about him was that he is big, quick and good.
"Coming in, I think he will want to prove himself at this level and
bring some intensity. We are lucky he decided to come to us - we had
to work hard to get him. He is a good prospect for the future and
was a key player we wanted to sign."
Lawrence said: "I wanted to join an EPL team as a starting goalie and when I talked to Tigers I liked the sound of the team they are putting together so it seemed like a good move.
"I remember playing in Telford as a child and there was always a great rivalry between Telford and Sheffield.
"Everyone wants to play to win. There is no point in playing otherwise. I want us to be pushing towards the top four places in the league, and would be looking to bring some silverware to Shropshire. I want to win every game if I can. The ambition would be to bring Telford back to being a winning side."
