Steelers dramatically recovered from a slow start but still went down 5-4 in a pulsating Charity Shield game at Coventry Blaze tonight.
Paul Thompson's men catapulted into a 3-0 lead (Carlyle Lewis, Adam Calder, 2) which had their fans crowing in the stands.
But Steeler workhorse Jonathan Phillips and feisty new winger Nathan Gillies reduced the deficit to one.
The Sheffield captain helped himself to his second to bring the game back level.
Dan Carlsson made it 4-3 shorthanded but defenceman Scott Basiuk again equalised.
The game then went into overtime, with Calder's hat-trick giving the league champions the bragging rights.
Fuller assessment in Thurday's Star.
