SHEFFIELD residents are being given the chance to vote on the traffic hotspot they most want to be improved.
In the last month hundreds of people have contacted the council to let them know what is driving them crazy on the city's roads and council bosses have shortlisted 20 potential schemes.

Sheffield Council is asking residents to vote for which one they think should be tackled first - and the most popular schemes will be started this autumn.

Coun Ian Auckland, Sheffield Council cabinet member for sustainable development and transport, said: "We have had a fantastic response to Driving Me Crazy and have received over 600 suggestions from the people of Sheffield.

"Obviously we have to weigh up the safety aspects as well as the impact on other schemes, but we have now drawn up a list of 20 potential schemes that people can vote for."

"Voting lasts until Monday August 18 and the scheme with the most votes will start on site in the autumn."

- People can vote online at www.sheffield.gov.uk until Monday August 18.

Scheme Descriptions

1. Abbeydale Road - Tesco Access

Problem Reported: When exiting Tesco supermarket on a green, the lights for the slip road entering Tesco remain red. As the traffic does not cross each other, this causes an unnecessary delay.

Solution: Re-phase signals.

2. Abbeydale Road - Bedale Road

Problem Reported: City-bound traffic has to wait to turn right for Broadfield Road. This creates queues due to the traffic island and red light even when there is no outbound traffic.

Solution: Remove traffic signals for the right turn into Bedale Road.

3. Attercliffe Common - Broughton Lane

Problem Reported: Delay at traffic lights.

Solution: Use new technology to improve signal timings and co-ordination at linked junctions along Attercliffe Common.

4. Bradfield Road - Road Safety Scheme

Problem Reported: The entrance to this road is now one single lane at the roundabout instead of the previous two. Traffic sometimes has to queue for long periods.

Solution: Reinstate two lane use of roundabout for traffic from Owlerton Green.

5. Fulwood Road - Manchester Road

Problem Reported: Traffic is held up for leaving Broomhill by a red light along Fulwood Road when priority is given to traffic turning right to Manchester Road.

Solution: Modify junction to assist outbound traffic, subject to a road safety audit.

6. Chesterfield Road - Scarsdale Road

Problem Reported: From Chesterfield Road there is insufficient time for the right turn up Scarsdale Road.

Solution: Introduce right turn filter arrow to Scardsale Road.

7. Ecclesfield Common

Problem Reported: When approaching The Common from Sheffield (Cross Hill) traffic lights need to let traffic proceed left onto the Common.

Solution: Use new technology to improve signal timings and co-ordination at linked junctions along Ecclesfield Common.

8. Langsett Road - Ripley Street

Problem Reported: Traffic queues on Ripley Street back from Langsett Road because too much priority given to traffic on Langsett Road.

Solution: Use new technology to improve signal timings and co-ordination at linked junctions

9. A61 IRR - Shalesmoor

Problem Reported: Tram interferes with traffic lights sequence.

Solution: Use new technology to improve signal timings and co-ordination at linked junctions.

10. Brookhill Roundabout

Problem Reported: Approaching the roundabout at the top of Broad Lane, motorists use right-hand lane instead of straight ahead to exit the roundabout for Walkley.

Solution: Better signing/ road markings to improve lane usage on Broad Lane approach.

11. Savile Street – Spital Hill (part of new Inner Ring Road works)

Problem Reported: The wide footway approaching the junction with Spital Hill means that straight on traffic in the nearside lane at the signals blocks off the left turn up Spital Hill.

Solution: Widen road at this location to ease left turn into Spital Hill.

12. Park Square - Broad Street

Problem Reported: Bus lane blocked by parked traffic on approach to Park Square. Very short traffic signal phase for access to Park Square.

Solution: Extend bus lane hours of operation on the Broad Street approach to Park Square.

13. Middlewood Road - Leppings Lane - Catch Bar Lane - Wadsley Lane - Parkside Road

Problem Reported: Where Catch Bar Lane meets Middlewood Road, the tram gets priority which has a knock on effect at the junction where Leppings Lane meets Catch Bar Lane.

Solution: Use new technology to improve signal timings and co-ordination at linked junctions in the area.

14. Middlewood Road/Middlewood Drive (former Middlewood Hospital)

Problem Reported: Both sets of lights turn to red when there is no traffic crossing.

Solution: Review of signal timings.

15. Walkley Lane - Morley Street

Problem Reported: Traffic cannot get up the road below Ripley Street due to the curve of the road where drivers travelling down can't see them.

Solution: Introduce box junction.

16. Barnsley Road - Owler Lane, Outer Ring Road

Problem Reported: Cars park on double yellow lines on Owler Lane to deliver to shops etc. reducing the two lanes down to one.

Solution: Additional enforcement of parking restrictions at Owler Lane.

17. Penistone Road - Barracks Access to Morrisons / B&Q

Problem Reported: Unable to exit from Livesey Street onto Penistone Road towards city centre at busy times.

Solution: Remove right turn from Barracks exit to improve capacity on Penistone Road.

18. Penistone Road - Rutland Road

Problem Reported: Morning peak traffic from Albert Terrace Road to Rutland Road mixes with inbound main road

Solution: Use new technology to improve signal timings and co-ordination at linked junctions around Penistone Road and Rutland Road.

19. Psalter Lane - Kingfield Road

Problem Reported: Traffic going out of town straight along Psalter Lane held up by right turners into Cowlishaw Road.

Solution: Create extra space for right turning traffic into Cowlishaw Road.

20. Ecclesall Road South – Knowle Lane to city boundary

Problem reported: As an urban road appears to be 30mph limit, but is actually 40mph.

Solution: Provide extra 40mph road signs.
