MORE than 5,500 runners are expected to pound the pavements around Sheffield on Sunday as the city hosts the Great Yorkshire Run for the second year on the trot.
Residents are invited to cheer on the runners of all ages and abilities as they tackle the 10km course, culminating in a spectacular city centre finish.

Among them will be members of the Stannington Brass Band, who will be swapping their trumpets
for trainers and making money instead of music to fund their entry into the Brass Band Championships of Great Britain later this year.

Several roads will be closed from 8am on the day to allow the course to be built and the race to take place. These include Haymarket, Castle Street, Snigg Hill, West Bar, Gibraltar Street and Shalesmoor from Corporation Street to Hoyle Street.

Penistone Road from Hoyle Street to Leppings Lane will also be shut, along with Parkside, Catch Bar Lane from Parkside to Leppings Lane, Bridge Street from West Bar up to and including Castlegate, Exchange Place, Park Square from the exit slip road to Broad Street, Commercial Street from Park Square roundabout to High Street, Lady's Bridge, and Blonk Street.

The roads will begin to be reopened from midday, with the area around the finish line remaining shut until 2pm for cleaning to take place.

Coun Sylvia Dunkley, cabinet member for culture, leisure and streetscene, said: "We're delighted to have had a huge increase in the numbers of participants registering for the event - from world class athletes as well as runners of all abilities - so there'll be a terrific atmosphere."

Its not much fun for the rest of us who want to get around this city, maybe they ought to change the name to frustration on the roads day?

I think crystal peaks man should get on the supertram ang go down to the city centre and join in the run. If he can run as good as he can moan he will be an outright winner.
Hope you all have a good day.
