AN IRISH couple have received an apology from Sheffield Children's Hospital after being wrongly accused of threatening staff with the IRA during a row over their daughter's care.
The allegation was made in a letter to Philip Morrison and Sonia Crossan, of Raisen Hall Road, Southey Green, claiming they had abused staff.

The couple, originally from Donegal and whose daughter Sarah needs specialist care for brittle bone disease, were served an 'acknowledgement of behaviour agreement' by Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

Philip, aged 32, gave his signature to ensure his two-and-a-half year-old daughter's care could continue but Sonia, 35, who was accused of making the threats, refused.

Her alleged remarks included "my grandfather's in the IRA" and "if you were in Ireland, you would be lynched, you would not be able to get away", during a meeting with hospital staff.

But the couple's solicitor was taking notes and supported their claim Sonia never made the threats.

Now Philip and Sonia have received a letter from Angela Wendzicha, the hospital trust's solicitor and head of risk management, who wrote: "It was not said during the particular meeting and I apologise. It appears there was a misunderstanding."

Philip said: "It's disgraceful. How can a member of staff lie like that - why are they still in their job?"

Sarah Morrison has such brittle bones that she suffered 30 rib fractures even before she was born in September 2006. She was initially given two days to live and her parents were not allowed even to give her a cuddle.

But she defied predictions and her family hope to celebrate her third birthday this year.

The dispute over her care arose last Autumn when Philip and Sonia said they were given protective equipment, but claimed it was unsuitable and were reluctant to use it.

Ms Wendzicha, of Sheffield Children's NHS Trust, said the youngster had received the best possible care but said her family had "acted in an aggressive manner" towards staff and the trust requested the couple enter into an acknowledgement of behaviour agreement.

She added: "At Sarah's most recent case review, it was understood threatening IRA references were made by Sonia. However, this was later confirmed as a misunderstanding.

"Philip has signed the behaviour agreement; Sonia is yet to sign, although their solicitor has confirmed both will abide by the conditions."

They could always go back to Donegal and try pot luck with the Irish Health Care System!

I notice the story relunctantly says that the coulpe are still subject to a behaviour agreement and they are to comply to its conditions? I wonder why?

Me thinks that they are naughty parents who run to the newspapers, knowing that one particular loca newspaper journalistic standards are poor and will print any old rubbish.

Sounds like they are abusive to the staff. They have not denied making the threats they just say that they did not make them in the meeting with the solicitors.
Nice, abusing hospital staff. Need to realise that their child should be the focus of both the parents and the hospital staff, not their behaviour. I am glad that little sarah is doing so well and i hope she continues to do so.

They are getting the treatment free so they should be grateful not abusive and why did they need to bring solicitors into it and are they paying for the solicitors themselfs or are they wasting more tax payers money with legal aid.

The staff at the Sheffield Childrens hospital do a very good job and one of my sons would be dead now if they had not been there for him.

They deserve all our respect not abuse.

This story is hilarious!!
Why on earth are they in a meeting with hospital staff with their solicitor present anyway??
It obviously shows they've caused trouble in the past.
And for the father to say that someone should lose their job because of it?? Who on earth does he think he is?? How can he justify a trained medical professional losing their job because they didn't kowtow to his needs??
And running to the local newspaper for sympathy?? They should be ashamed of their behaviour, not flauntig it around.
Sheffield Childrens Hospital do an amazing job, usually hindered by parents with a "gimme gimme gimme, I know my rights" attitude.
So Morrison and Crossan, a little more parenting and a lot less pathetic behaviour please!!

how pathetic go back to ireland, there is plenty of ill children here who probably needed her bed. the hospital staff do a great job without having to deal with abusive parents.
