A SHOCKED grandad today told how a sports car crashed into his Doncaster home and burst into flames, narrowly missing injuring his baby grandson.
The Subaru Impreza smashed into the front of Raymond Oliver's Church Way home, sending the front door flying open - just inches from his three month old grandson.

It was one of two horrific crashes in Doncaster around rush hour last night which caused traffic chaos and left a motorcyclist dead.

Parts of York Road and Wheatley Hall Road were closed for several hours between 4pm and 8pm as police investigated the collisions.

In the second incident, on York Road, Sunnyfields, a 42-year-old motorcyclist from Carcroft died after he was in collision with a car at a junction on the newly-built quality bus corridor. He was riding his blue Suzuki SV650 along York Road towards Woodlands just after 6pm when the incident happened.

It is thought that he collided with a black Peugeot 206 as the car turned right across the dual carriageway onto Alwyn Avenue towards Scawsby.

The woman driving the car, a 30 year-old from Sprotbrough, was not injured in the collision and is to be questioned by police.

Anyone who saw the incident or the motorcycle leading up to it should call the Accident Witness Line on 0114 2202970 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. The fatal crash happened two hours after police were forced to close the east-bound carriageway of Wheatley Hall Road when the Subaru car ploughed into the front of Mr Oliver's house.

Police say the Subaru went out of control when it swerved to avoid a Fiat Punto emerging from Brooke Street and went through fencing before coming to rest against the front door of the house occupied by Mr Oliver, aged 52, his wife Lesley, their 28-year-old daughter Lyne, and her three month old son Harley.

Raymond said: "It happened at about 4pm and there was just me and the baby in the house.

"The baby's chair was right next to the front door and all of a sudden the door swung open with huge force missing the baby by inches.

"I had no idea what was going on. It was really shocking. The first thing I did was put the baby in the kitchen to get him out of harm's way.

"I grabbed the fire extinguisher because the car's engine was on fire and started to put it out.

"I think there were three people in the car but I was too busy putting out the fire to take much notice.

Some passersby were trying to get a woman out of the back of the car while I was putting the fire out.

"It really frightened me. Harley could have died, the car hit the house with such terrific force and noise and the door flew open really violently.

"My daughter came back home just after it happened and as soon as she saw it she started screaming, she was afraid the baby could have been hurt: "Within a few hours it was back to normal but there were still bits of car all over the place.

"The person I feel really for is the lass in the back of the car. She was a real mess when they got her out; her face was all covered in blood. She was screaming and obviously in a lot of pain. It wasn't a nice thing to see."

The man driving the Subaru, a 30-year-old from Norton, was treated for minor injuries but a woman passenger sustained more serious facial injuries and was detained in DRI.

Rush-hour drivers were diverted along Beckett Road, Wheatley, to avoid the crash scene.

One witness, who lives yards away from the scene, said it all happened very quickly.

He added: "The brakes went on and he hit the wall. If anyone had been on the pavement they would have been killed."

Another resident said: "The crash was so loud I heard it from my house on Dockin Hill Road."
