MYSTERIOUS coloured lights spotted floating over Sheffield on Saturday night have left residents - and police - puzzled.
Eyewitness reports vary about the strange sightings with some people saying they saw around 10 orange lights in the sky while others spotted up to 100 green lights floating around the Meadowhall area.

John and Angela Crookes watched the lights
for around five minutes in Shiregreen after they were alerted to the unusual sight by a bemused neighbour.

Angela, 30, said: "It was quite bizarre and not like anything we had ever seen before. To start with there were quite a few of the lights in a cluster. They weren't flashing and didn't make a noise but were as clear as anything."

Do you have photos or video footage of the strange lights over Sheffield? Did you see the lights or know what they were? Add your comment below and email videos or photos to staronline@sheffieldnewspapers.co.uk

John described seeing a group of around 40 of the orange lights, which then headed off towards Concord Park before other lights appeared in much smaller groups.

The 33-year-old added: "I was wondering if it was an asteroid which had broken up but one changed direction and you could see something like the jet stream of a plane coming after them."

Norman Marritt said he spotted several pairs of green lights flying over Shiregreen at about 10.30pm on Saturday.

He said: "My wife saw them first and we both watched them for the time it took them to go past. I counted 10 pairs and there had already been some more before that.

"They were circles of lights going in pairs and they seemed to come from the direction of Rotherham. I would like to find out what they were."

South Yorkshire Police said they did not receive any extra calls around the time the lights were spotted and have no explanation for what might have been behind them.

This happens just about every weekend. They usually turn out to be Chinese lanterns launched from a party nearby.

But if they were these Chinese lanterns, surely they would go in different directions!

I also saw these lights, they were coming from over the top of the wooly woods from the shiregreen area. I took video footage on my phone but you couldn't see anything, I also took a picture on my digital camera but when i uploaded the pictures on to my PC all you could see was the dark night sky. all the sightings of the lights were scene around 10:30-11:00. I also live near meadowhall and did see some similiar green lights around the same time.
If any would like to contact me Please leave me a message.

UFOs over Sheffield...X-Files film premiers on Friday...hmmm..."I want to believe.."
(PS: If aliens did invade it would be a walkover as our armed forces are being squandered in Afghanistan and Iraq)

I wonder if they were testing the lights in the arena ready for music in the sun at the grass bowl.

When the student games was taking place they shone powerful coloured search lights into the sky. These moved in groups, pretty too.

we stood tonight at our local club and watched what seems to be exactly what has been reported tonight in yorkshire. it was at virtually the same time. Orange lights, first sightings were about 30 of them, by the time i saw them, there were about 6 - 10. drifting to the right and disappeared out of sight, seen by about 15 of us.
