A COUPLE escaped unhurt from their blazing Sheffield home after a smoke alarm alerted them to a fire in their kitchen during the early hours of today.
The man and woman, aged in their 50s, were asleep when the smoke detector activated in their home on Arnold Avenue, Gleadless.

An electrical fault in their fridge freezer sparked the blaze, which ripped through the kitchen and smoke logged the rest of the property.

The blaze was extinguished by firefighters, who arranged for the fire victim support unit to attend the scene to offer the couple help.

Firefighter Rick Green, from Mansfield Road station, said: "Had the couple not had a smoke alarm things could have been much worse. They followed the correct advice - by getting out and staying out, to let us deal with the fire."
