A COUPLE from Sheffield claim they were "told off" for dialling 999 - after a shot was apparently fired through their window.
Ahmed Hizam, aged 76, and his wife Irene, 70, say they have been left terrified after their bathroom window exploded, sending shards of glass flying.

Mr Ahmed, a retired steelworker who came to Sheffield from Tanzania 52 years ago, says he could have been killed. But when he and his wife dialled emergency services they were told their attack was not an emergency.

What do you think? Add your comment below.

Ahmed told The Star: "If I had been at the washbasin in front of the window I could have been killed.

"The glass went flying everywhere. It wasn't a stone, or a golf ball, or anything like that, because the force at which the glass shattered was far too powerful.

"We have looked around and can't see anything obvious like a stone, so it must have been some kind of a pellet.

"They said it wasn't an emergency and told us off for ringing 999 but I could have been killed."

More than 16 hours later a police officer was despatched to the couple's house on The Dial, Firth Park.

By that time the desperate pensioners had telephoned South Yorkshire Police for a second time to find out when the incident was going to be investigated.

Irene said: "We are disappointed that the police told us we shouldn't have dialled 999 and that it took so long for them to come to see us.

"It was as though they didn't think our window being shot out was serious enough."

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "We are aware of an incident of criminal damage which occurred at The Dial in the Firth Park area of the city.

"However, due to the high volume of emergency calls we were experiencing at the time we were unable to speak to the victim in person until the following day.

"A window in the property was smashed by an unknown object.

"This is a serious offence which could have resulted in someone being injured.

"House to house enquiries have been carried out and all lines of enquiry have been investigated.

"Officers from the Burngreave, Firth Park, and Shiregreen Safer Neighbourhood Teams are carrying out regular patrols in the area."

Anyone with information should call PC Darren McKenna on 0114 2523994 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Pathetic. If a window at police HQ had been shot through, the whole city centre would have been closed down. That would have been considered an emergency.

It's the job of the police to protect us, not patronise and lecture us.

Yet another case of the Star over reacting, Don't you listen to the police and politicians, crime figures are down.
The reason crime is down is if they don't respond the crime is not reportable, and does not become a statistic

They should certainly have stopped attending assaults, domestic incidents, road traffic accidents and the like to investigate the case of the broken window.

When a gang battle with pickaxe handles, baseball bats and a petrol bomb involving 60 youths broke out in jordanthorpe, my brother-in-law (along with four other residents at least) rang the cops four times. It took them an hour to respond. One cop said they'd been tied up with a "disturbance" elsewhere which turned out to be a noisy student drinks party at a house in Broomhill (which was reported in The Star)...When the battle of jordanthorpe appeared in The Star (2 days after the broomhill booze-up) the cops said they'd no evidence a petrol bomb was used..our pete told them over the phone at the time, so did his neighbour, and the cops removed the remains of the bottle plus weapons. They never bothered coming back for statements, though...

Anyone who needs the police in the future should remember when calling 999...1,Tell them you are an M.P.or maybe a sports-star or even an actor. This should give you preference over the usual local tax-paying peasants. Finally,if you require the bobbies platinum service,ie:Helicopter, swat team and dogs.Just tell the operator their is a car parked on yellow lines outside your home.Bring back proper policing. The days when cops were taller than 3feet and uniforms were not mothercare issued.

If you really need the police in a hurry just tell them you're gay and someone is calling you names. They'll be there double-quick.

i'm sure half of the people commenting on this story dont have the first clue about the police and what constitutes an emergency. you can all make your little immature comments but if you actually realised how it works then you'd all keep your mouths firmly shut and appreciate how hard the police work.
