FRIENDS and relatives of a South Yorkshire man who died of cancer at a tragically young age have organised a sponsored bike ride to raise cash in his memory.
Money collected will be donated to the Devi Palmer Memorial Fund, set up to help leukaemia patients and those suffering from other blood disorders.
Devi, from South Anston, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2000 and lost his fight for
life six years later, aged just 26.
Around £30,000 has been raised in his memory over the years and is to be spent on ways of making life easier for sick people suffering similar conditions.
One of the ideas his relatives are considering is buying a caravan on the coast to provide holidays for the sick and their families.
They have also bought a bungalow in South Anston which they are converting into a refuge for patients having to travel to South Yorkshire for specialist hospital treatment.
The latest fundraiser is a sponsored bike ride from the Premier Inn at Chesterfield to Rother Valley Golf Club, on June 8.
Former professional boxer Johnny Nelson has agreed to take part in the event, which starts at around 10.30am, to try to attract the crowds.
For sponsor forms or to hire a bike and take part, contact Devi's mum, Shirley Palmer, by emailing
devi.palmer@tiscali.co.uk or calling 07790 673 989.
