TWO dedicated Sheffield fundraisers and friends may find their paths cross as they set off on two completely separate adventures for charity.
Phil Haywood and John Hopkins are members of Abbeydale Rotary Club and are going the extra mile to celebrate its fiftieth year.

But while one will be relying on pedal power the other will be hoping his bus pass is enough to see him through.

In 2004 John rode a bicycle from Lands End to John o' Groats and raised over £11,500 for charity - £7000 for Water Aid and £4500 for the Derbyshire Branch of the Red Cross.

Today (May 2) the 68-year-old from Fulwood sets off on his bicycle from the most easterly point of the British mainland, Ness Point Lowestoft, aiming to arrive at the most westerly point, the western end of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, on May 15.

He will be raising cash for The Sheffield Family Holiday Fund which provides the means for a holiday for disadvantaged families in the city and WaterAid, which helps provide water to some of the world's poorest people.

Friends and family members will be accompanying John at various stages of the trip and people back home in Sheffield can visit
www.followtheyellowgorseroad.co.uk to follow his progress daily.

He will also be offering two prizes, paid out of his own pocket, one to the supporter who has the nearest guess of the total distance ridden and another for the overall cycling time taken.

Whilst John is travelling East to West, Phil will be setting off from Lands End by public transport and travelling to Berwick upon Tweed using his national concessionary travel pass.

Phil used to be the director of planning with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive so he should not have any trouble planning his route.

He opted to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society because of the support they gave to a relative and help they offer in particular to people diagnosed at an early age.

He sets off on the six day journey on May 22 and is offering a mystery prize which will involve travel to the person who can estimate how many cumulative minutes late - or early - he will be for the whole journey.

For sponsorship or to have a guess at either competition contact John on Sheffield 0114 2305061 or Phil at philhconsult@aol.com or 0114 2363003.
