The striker had been on loan from the London club for the last four months of the season, but just one goal in 10 starts has persuaded manager Simon Davey to look for a new centre-forward.

Nardiello, aged 25, won a cap for Wales a year ago after helping Barnsley secure Championship safety in the 2006-7 campaign with nine goals.

He turned down a Barnsley contract offer last summer in favour of a move to QPR.

Relegated Derby and FA Cup finalists Cardiff are reported to be tracking the former Manchester United trainee.

Barnsley will also let former skipper Paul Reid, midfielder Andy Johnson and striker Kim Christensen leave.

All three are under contract but have not been involved in Davey's plans this season.

Reid went on loan to League One play-off team Carlisle but returned injured. Johnson made only four starts after his free transfer from Leicester in the summer.

Danish forward Christensen was never been included in the starting 11 for Davey after his move from Odense in August last year.

Barnsley skipper Brian Howard admits he could quit the club in the close season.

In an interview for the Professional Footballers' Association website, Howard said: "I have still got a year left on my contract at Barnsley but I know there are a few clubs who want to put bids in so we will have to wait and see what happens."

Former Barnsley coach Andy Rhodes has left Ipswich.

Said Ipswich manager Jim Magilton: "Andy been a valuable member of my backroom staff over the last two years but I have decided to freshen things up for the start of next season.

"I'd like to thank Andy for his contribution to the club since I've been manager here. We wish him every success for the future."

His son, Jordan, a striker and former Oakwell academy graduate, remains at Ipswich.
