MANCHESTER City have opened the way for Doncaster Rovers to move for defender Matt Mills by declaring he can leave Eastlands.
"Manchester City have now decided that they are willing to sell him," said Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll.

"The old regime with Sven and the Chief Executive, had stated that, but with Mark (Hughes) coming in, he wanted to assess his squad – which I've said before I would have done as well.

"They have decided that he is going to be too far down the pecking order and he can leave and, hopefully, now we can move forward with that as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, O'Driscoll was left to take some positives out of last night's 1-0 defeat at League Two Morecambe at Christie Park.

The Rovers boss admitted that although the side were disjointed, the attitude shown by the blend of young and experienced players donning the red and white shirts was worthy of praise.

"We've lost a couple of centre halves," confessed O'Driscoll following the clash in Lancashire. "We've ended up with Gareth Taylor at centre-half and young Robbie Hall playing right-back and Jimmy O'Connor playing sweeper; so we knew it was going to be different. We said in training yesterday morning that it was going to be a mix and match kind of a game.

"We knew it was going to be a bit 'hit and miss', but I thought that our attitude was first class. We've worked hard this pre-season and we know that there are areas that we want to strengthen – but that doesn't happen overnight."

Meanwhile, newest Rovers signing Tomi Ameobi had his first run-out for the Rovers in the first half against Morecambe; but admits himself that it's still early days.

"We didn't win the game, which was a bit disappointing," the 19 year-old striker commented.

"It's still pre-season, we're still getting fit and hopefully against Newcastle, we can put it right this weekend."

The game against Kevin Keegan's men at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday (3:00pm ko) could possibly see Tomi go up against his older brother, Shola, who has worked his way up the ranks at St. James' Park.
