LEAGUE One side Brighton & Hove Albion look set to make an inquiry about Chesterfield's out-of-contract defender, Janos Kovacs.
The 22-year-old Hungarian centre half, who travelled home to Budapest last week, was Chesterfield's Player of the Year runner-up after starting all but five of the club's league two games last season.
The former MTK Budapest star, who came to Saltergate after being recommended by Sunderland keeper Marton Fulop, a lifelong friend, has been offered a deal by Lee Richardson.
Should he choose to move to the Withdean Stadium, or anywhere else in England, he would be subject to a compensation fee because he is under 24 years old.
Brighton, also keen on Chesterfield midfielder Peter Leven, had a change in manager last week. Chairman Dick Knight controversially replaced Dean Wilkins with Micky Adams after finishing one place off the play-off zone, offering Wilkins the job of senior coach.
Knight also revealed a loss of £2.8m by the club in the year ending June 2007 indicating the fragile existence of Albion as they continue their quest of building a new ground in Falmer. Meanwhile Adams indicated he would be looking again at Brighton's retained list, with three or four of the players released by Wilkins possibly being offered new deals.
Spireites are still waiting for responses from four players about new deals. Kovacs and Leven plus defender Phil Picken and long serving midfielder Derek Niven have all to indicate whether they wish to extend their time at Saltergate.
Veteran striker Steve Fletcher rejected his offer in favour of returning South for family reasons.
