Stocksbridge PS 0 v Sheffield United 2:

SHEFFIELD United players have been warned to be on their best behaviour during the remainder of the club's pre-season programme after Sun Jihai was granted a reprieve from suspension.
The China midfielder was dismissed just 19 minutes into his debut for Kevin Blackwell's side after receiving two yellow cards during a warm-up fixture against KVK Tienen.

The Football Association confirmed yesterday that, despite being sent off by referee Joeri Van De Velde, Sun will be available for selection when United open the new Championship campaign at Birmingham City on Saturday August 9.

But officials at Soho Square also told The Star that any member of Blackwell's squad guilty of a more serious indiscretion would miss the trip to St Andrews.

Blackwell will remind his players of their responsibilities before Saturday's first-team outing at Scunthorpe.

At Bramall Lane, Blackwell was busy applying the finishing touches to Darius Henderson's protracted transfer from Watford and across the city at Bracken Moor, things were proving equally laborious as Stocksbridge Park Steels provided a now annual display of spirited resistance against their illustrious neighbours.

There appeared plenty for both sets of supporters to savour with the hosts unveiling five new signings while United, under the watchful eye of reserve team coach Mark Smith, fielded several players expected to feature in the Championship next season.

Lee Hendrie, Sun Jihai, Chris Armstrong, David Carney and Ian Bennett all started the match but it was Nicky Law, an attacking midfielder yet to fulfil his undoubted potential, who emerged as the driving force behind this victory.

Law impressed with his drive and tenacity during his 73-minute appearance which, if repeated on a bigger stage, can only enhance his prospects under Blackwell.

Indeed it was his fifth minute run, halted by Steve Kennedy, that saw Rotherham referee Mick Bell award the first of two penalties, Carney converting it.

The second, on the stroke of half time, came when Law surged into the box and goalkeeper David Ratcliffe, who later made fine saves to deny substitute Adam Chapman and Sam Wedgbury, intervened. The former Bradford City loanee dusted himself down to double United's advantage.

Stocksbridge PS: Ratcliffe, D Richards (Adams 69), Oldham, Lovell (Normanschild 69), Kennedy, Wilkinson, I Richards, Ashley, Ring, Wainman (Hirst 68), Riley (Sidebottom 68).

United: Bennett, Chanot, Lowton, Jihai, Wedgbury, Hendrie, Armstrong, Carney (Quinn 68), Robertson, Law (Chapman 73), Naughton.
Referee: Mick Bell (Rotherham)

United enter the final phase of their preparations for the new season with Saturday's game at Scunthorpe (3pm) followed by fixtures at Bury (July 29) and Huddersfield (Aug 2 noon KO).

Anyone wishing to travel to Gigg Lane can book a place on the Sportsman pub's supporters coach. Seats, priced £15, are available by calling 0114 2722555.

United send a team tomorrow to Sheffield FC, who play at home to Tamworth tonight.
