YOU don't get much more British than a fish supper but for every belting fish shop there are plenty that are less than savoury.
Thankfully Sheffield can boast one of the best chippies in the country and that's great news for anyone who likes to their fish fresh and their chips straight from the fryer.

Abbey Friar opened 18 years ago and has built up a reputation for great
fish and chips and quality fast food.

It was recently awarded four stars by Sheffield Council and both this shop and Abbey Friar I, further down Abbeydale Road, have been awarded the Seafish Industry Fryers' Quality Award – the only fish shops in Sheffield to hold the accolade.

Both shops use only fresh fish and deliveries are made daily.

Sadly, only a handful of Sheffield fish shops now use daily delivered fresh cod, haddock and plaice but quality is assured at Abbey Friar.

I chose fresh haddock and regular chips with peas and was delighted with my substantial takeaway.

The fish was deliciously fresh, the batter crisp and golden and the chips were plentiful and cooked to perfection.

Failing to order fish and chips in such a good chippie would be criminal but if you were persuaded to try something different then Abbey Friar has an extensive menu.

Choose from fishcakes, pies, fryits, rissoles, cod roe, scampi, chicken burger, nuggets, donor kebabs, chicken kebabs and sausage.

Wash it down with a takeaway tea or coffee and wonder why you don't have fish and chips more often when they taste this good.
