Takeaway test: Everything in the Garden is rosy...

THERE are few things worse than fancying a takeaway only to remember that you have no petrol in the car, you've drunk a glass of wine, and EastEnders is about to start.
So thank goodness for a flier from Jade Garden popping through our letterbox recently because without it Sunday night's tea would have been beans on toast.

Our village only has a chippy and a pizza shop, and our favourite Chinese doesn't deliver,
so we thought we'd risk it and try a takeaway we had never been to before.

The woman who took our order was polite and friendly and although she said it would take 45 minutes for the food to arrive it was there on our doorstep in just 20.

And it was beautiful.

It didn't have that dried up, re-heated feel that some takeaway food has. Instead every dish tasted fresh and was full of flavour.

Even the rice was light and fluffy and came in a container big enough to feed two people.

We started off with crispy duck and spring rolls, which would have been big enough for a main course with an accompaniment of rice.

After a rest – and making a mental note to restart my dreaded diet tomorrow – we began our main courses and were surprised at how good they were.

We wouldn't have been disappointed if the dishes had been served up in a restaurant - they were that tasty.

The chicken, in a plentiful Szechuan sauce, had a real kick to it and my chicken with mushrooms was delicious, with a garlicky sauce.

Our prawn crackers also tasted fresh, light and crispy, and the chips – although I was too full to eat many – were cooked to perfection.

You never know what to expect when you try a takeaway for the first time.

But this one proved to be well worth the gamble.
