SATURDAY night and the cupboard is as bare as Old Mother Hubbard's so it's a good excuse for a takeaway.
Being a curry fan my first choice would be Indian, but a change is as good as a rest, or so they say.
Strolling through Woodseats (always quicker than driving) there are a host of takeaway joints. From pizza and kebabs to curry and fish and chips
but this time we decided to go Oriental.
The Canton Wok is on the corner of Broxholme and Chesterfield Roads and boasts "exclusive restaurant-style Chinese meals to take away." It sounded good so we placed our order and arrived back to find our food ready and waiting.
Impressively speedy, the Canton Wok was out of the starting blocks and straight into the lead.
Cantonese style spring rolls were a tasty appetiser and not too greasy despite being deep fried.
Sadly the crispy won tons were all crisp and no wan tan - the filling was distinctly lacking and they weren't very warm.
Moving on to the second lap, the Canton Wok was slipping down the field.
We tucked into duck in plum sauce, Thai style chicken chow mein and egg fried rice.
The duck was succulent and tasty but seemed to be in a sweet and sour sauce - and there was no evidence of any plum - but it was still the best dish of the day.
The disappointing chow mein saw the Canton Wok drop further down the field.
Spiced bits of shredded chicken and noodles needed more flavour and were disappointingly dry.
Giving the Canton Wok the benefit of the doubt, it's quite possible we made poor menu choices.
But for this early leader to win the race more training is definitely in order.
