HAS new restaurant boss Peter Foreman chimed with changing times with his Back to British menu?
At the time of writing the Bay Tree traditional English restaurant was due to open tonight at 617 London Road, in premises previously occupied by the Portofino, an Italian.

The menu includes old favourites such as stilton mushrooms, home made paté
and parsnip and apple soup, followed by meat and potato pie, gammon steak, roast baron of pork and duckling with apple and sage stuffing, rounded off by Bramley apple pie or baked rice pudding.

"We'll see what customers tell us and change the menu accordingly," says Peter, who was at the Abbeydale Golf Club for the last 11 years. Before that he cooked at the Hathersage Inn and Prince of Wales at Baslow.

"There will be good ingredients but we'll be trying not to mess about with them," he says. Expect to spend up to £25 for three courses and coffee. Book on 0114 255 5655.

Sushi bar gives taste of Far East

HONG Kong based sushi chef Rich Wong has opened the Yama sushi bar on London Road, Sheffield, only the second in the city. The other is Sakushi, which opened on Campo Lane in the summer.

Yama, which seats around 20, is Mr Wong's first venture in the UK. He trained with a sushi school in Hong Kong.

Yama offers a number of set menus and individual dishes. It is open all week except Mondays from 12-3pm and 5pm until late.

Another new venture on London Road is Cafe Zlat, a Russian deli cum internet cafe.

Stout takes first prize at festival

WHILE local beers were very much in evidence at last week's Steel City Beer Festival they didn't take the top honour.

The champion beer was the Cheshire Dunham Massey brewery's Milk Stout although Thornbridge Brewery's Jaipur IPA had second place.

Other local brewery successes were a third in the bitter section for Acorn of Barnsley's Yorkshire Pride; first and second respectively in the best bitter judging for Thornbridge's Ashford and Sheffield Brewery's Paradise Pale; while strong bitter awards all went local - first and second to Thornbridge for Jaipur IPA and Kipling, while Kelham Island took third for Pale Rider.

Bradford Brewery took a second for its Farmers Stout in the stouts and porters section.
