GONE are the days when going to the chippie was a simple two minute job...
Choice was limited to cod or haddock and chips, with perhaps a portion of peas thrown in for good measure.

These days the traditional fish and chip shop has undergone so many changes it can take you 10 minutes to trawl through the menu.

I tho
ught a quick takeaway from the Barracuda would be easy – but I had reckoned without a menu which wouldn't be out of place in the local library.

It resembles a guide to eating around the world – with something for everyone whatever your taste.

Twenty different pizzas, kebabs, curries, umpteen fried chicken dishes, and scrumptious pies line up alongside your standard fish and chips.

There are also healthy options.

Reading through the list of specials – there are even more on a blackboard outside – can add another five minutes to the job of choosing what you want.

I plumped for the regular cod and chips with peas and was not disappointed.

The fish was white, full of flavour and wrapped in a crisp, tasty batter, while the chips were well up to scratch. Mushy peas can disappoint – but not this time.

My wife decided on a vegetarian pizza and was full of praise for the fresh topping of onions, mushrooms, pepper and tomatoes. Her only grumble was too much cheese!

The Barracuda's specials are extremely good value and are obviously popular with their customers. You would be hard pushed to get a large haddock, large cod, chips, choice of peas, beans or curry sauce, and a drink for a shade under nine quid anywhere else.

We chose to eat from the standard menu – and our bill came to a bit over £8.
