ANIMAL Rights activists have scored another success in their campaign against foie gras being sold in Sheffield.
Sheffield Animal Friends have persuaded the Showroom restaurant on Paternoster Row to take it off the menu.

They spotted it on a sample menu on the Showroom's website.
Head chef Paul Murton, above, says it was put together for a wedding and used
as a sample menu.

"We figured since the foie gras issue is now such a massive topic of debate we would rather be a more ethical company and avoid any further conflict or receive any of the threats we had been warned about."

The protesters, who have already claimed victories at two local restaurants and got it banned from stalls of the continental market, also picketed Moran's on Abbeydale Road South.

They had seen the duck's liver on a website but chef-patron Bryan Moran pointed out it was an old menu from last year. He's not selling foie gras now but refused to sign an undertaking not to use it again.

Bosses of wine merchants Barrels & Bottles and a Chesterfield-based cookery school, they've written the book to show how to match wine with food.

Andrew says: "This particular vintage would sell for nearly £2,500 a case. We'll ask everyone who buys the book to put their names in a hat and invite the winner to help us drink it."

The book costs £14.95. Tickets for the evening, which starts at 7pm, are available from Waterstone's or Barrels and Bottles on 01246 453 399.

It is great to hear that people are campaigning against foie gras around sheffield. I am pretty disappointed that people put geese and ducks through a great deal of suffering for what is just a delicacy.

The traditional production methods are illegal in the UK, restaurants have to import this product to get through the loophole.

Well done to the Sheffield Animal Friends group, i wish them more success.

The news of The Showroom restaurant deciding against serving foie gras in the future is to be welcomed.

Sheffield Animal Friends have shown that restaurant owners and chefs, can in the face of protest, make positive changes to their menus.

The campaign against foie gras, is a campaign for the freedom of geese and ducks from the gavage sheds of France. We encourage everyone to inform themselves of the kind of practices that are involved to enlarge the liver of a male goose or duck to up to ten times the natural size.

We call on all restaurants, delicatessens and meat suppliers in Sheffield and surrounding areas involved in this trade to take the positive step of removing their support for foie gras.

Excellent to hear of this success, i can't believe that we are called a nation of animal lovers with some of the things that go on to animals.
