ACTION DESK: Growing row over roots

editorial image

  • by David Walsh

VALERIE Walker is terrified that roots from a large tree will damage her house and no one seems to be listening to her cries for help.

The 70-year-old widow has seen then come up in her front garden damaging a path and tearing through plastic sheeting in six or seven places.

It is clear they are gradually closing in on her house.

Valerie has lived in the semi on Firs Hill Crescent since it was built in 1972. She bought it after her husband William died of a heart attack seven years ago.

She said: “I’m not getting any response from the council. I have had three different reference numbers but no action.”

Last month a landmark beech tree on Tom Lane, Nether Green, was felled after roots started to affect homes.

AN Amey spokeswoman said: “This tree is the responsibility of the local housing association, however we are working closely with them to find a solution as soon as possible.”
