COUNCIL chiefs say shopping at the markets is an ideal way to save money and boost the city's economy.
"We want to keep the markets vibrant and thank traders for staying with Sheffield through difficult times," said council leader Coun Paul Scriven.
"It's a challenge to the people of Sheffield to use the markets because times are hard. Use the mark
ets more and you will be surprised at the excellent quality of products on sale there which are fresh and extremely good value.
"People don't always have to go into supermarkets because we have produce just as good in our markets."
Coun Sylvia Anginotti, cabinet member for employment and enterprise, said there had been an increase in visitors to the markets: "There is a footfall of 85,000 people a week at Castle Market and we have added another 1,500 to that through various campaigns.
"There is still a way to go but we are going in the right direction.
"I do appreciate the work the traders have done and we do want good transfer from one market to another in two and a half years time."
She is also sympathetic to the Moor traders. "We are moving things forward and hope to have further discussions and come forward with some progress and security for the Moor traders."
