THE dangers of texting while driving are being brought home to a group of young Doncaster motorists who have only just passed their tests.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is inviting young drivers to attend a free event where they can see the true results of driving while distracted or under the influence of drink or drugs.
The event, from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesday September 2, i
nvolves staff from Doncaster fire station and other agencies in the Road Safety Partnership, such as South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Camera Partnership, Doncaster Council, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and local driving instructors. The event, to be held at the Carr House Centre, Danum Road, is aimed at 17 to 24-year-olds, who are the most at risk from being involved in a road traffic collision.
It will highlight the dangers involved in drink and drug driving, while also demonstrating the results of texting or being on the phone while driving.
Youngsters will be able to test their reaction skills and car-related free gifts will be given out.
Station manager Shaun Pilley from Doncaster station said: "Some of these drivers will have only just passed their driving test.
"We want to get the message across to them that being distracted while driving, or being under the influence of drink or drugs, can have terrible consequences."
