FUNDRAISERS at South Yorkshire's specialist cancer hospital have seen their efforts move up a gear after Doncaster builders donated a car to help them carry out their work.
The unusual Chevrolet Matiz "bubble" car, handed over by Frank Haslam Milan and Bramall Construction, will be used by staff at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal to raise funds for the hospital. It will make appearances at fundraising events, as well as being used by volunteer drivers to collect and replace charity donation boxes.
Last year £32,000 was raised through collection boxes, making the car a vital part of the fundraising effort.
The firms, both owned by Doncaster based Keepmoat, have paid for the lease of the car for the past two years. Now they have decided to donate the remaining £3,500 required to buy the vehicle outright for the charity.
To celebrate the donation, patient Joseph Molloy, aged 62, from Town Moor in Doncaster, joined fundraising staff and Keepmoat representatives for a handover outside Keepmoat Stadium.
The former bus driver has been receiving treatment for five months for bowel, liver and lung cancer. He is now well on the way to recovery.
As a supporter of the hospital's fundraising campaign, he was thrilled with the car.
He said: "This donation will be a great boost to the hospital's fundraising efforts."
