A BATTLE to stop controversial plans for a new supermarket on Bawtry's High Street could be ended tomorrow.
Doncaster Council's planning committee is being asked to give final detailed planning permission for the proposed store on the Corner Garage car auctions site, and officers are recommending approval.

The scheme has provoked a campaign by residents
to try to stop it going ahead, with a 620 name petition in opposition being submitted to Doncaster Council. Stated reasons for objection include a lack of need, its effect on other retailers in Bawtry, problems associated with an increase in traffic plus concerns about the existing traffic conditions near of the site.

If the scheme is approved, a new roundabout will be built on High Street to allow shoppers to have access the supermarket car park. An existing petrol station on the site would be retained.

Parking for 90 cars would be provided and the applicant, Leonard Tomlinson Ltd, has said it would use red brick in the construction. The site is part of the Bawtry Conservation area.

Some objectors say removing the car auction buildings, many dating back to the 1960s., would alter the character and the appearance of the conservation area.

But a report by council officers due to go before the council's planning committee tomorrow says the scheme is believed to be acceptable in terms of its impact on residents lifestyles and on the conservation area.

Bawtry town mayor George Spencer said: "There really is mixed feeling in Bawtry because some people want it and some people are against it. There are some concerns over traffic."

The developer says it has yet to reach an agreement with a particular supermarket, but added several big names were interested in the site.
