News in brief: Light time to start festivities

BAWTRY residents can look forward to the town's first Christmas shopping evening on Thursday December 3 from 5pm to 8pm. The event coincides with the annual switch on of the Christmas lights.
This year the task will be performed by Mayor Vivienne Wilcox who will flick the switch for two giant Christmas trees in Market Hill and The Courtyard shopping precinct. There will also be festive music, stalls and refreshments.

Staying social

THE Park Social Club in Victoria Road, Balby, could be allowed to stay open until 1am at weekends if an application for a new licence by Shelley Rose is granted permission by Doncaster Council's licensing committee. Objectors have until Christmas Eve to make written representations.

Make a show

YOUNG people wanting to show off their musical talents will get their chance tomorrow when Doncaster Show Band holds auditions for new members.

Those wanting to take part should turn up between 2pm and 4pm at the Ready Steady Store on Wheatley Hall Road, Doncaster. They are looking for people aged 10 to 18 who can play wind, brass, percussion and drums.

Tree-mendous

RANGERS will help visitors to Brodsworth Community Woodland identify trees during a leisurely winter stroll tomorrow between 10am and 12pm. The site is off Long Lands Lane and further details can be obtained by calling 01302 820278.

French Fete

MEMBERS of Les Francophiles de Tickhill - the Tickhill French Society - will be staging a Christmas Fete on Wednesday in the Parish Room from 7.30pm, with French games, carols and food.

Jolly walk

THE next Walks for Women event is a Christmas jolly of three-and-a-half miles along the Don Gorge. Ramblers will be back for lunch at the Boat Inn, Sprotbrough, on Saturday December 5. Meet at Sprotbrough Lock at 10.30am.

Memory Tree

DONCASTER Civic Mayor Rose Jones will be in the Frenchgate shopping centre tomorrow morning to help launch the annual Memory Tree for Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust.

Fun at the fayre

A CHRISTMAS Fayre will be held tomorrow at St Philip and St James Church in Victoria Road, Bentley, from 2pm when there will be a selection of stalls and games.
