DONCASTER Council will have a Conservative in a position of power for the first time since it was established in 1974.
Tory group leader Coun Patricia Schofield has revealed she has accepted the post of deputy mayor under the borough's newly-elected mayor Peter Davies.

Mr Davies, who was voted in for the English Democrats, is a former Doncaster North Conservative
Party official and the father of Tory MP for Shipley, Philip Davies.

He has held talks with leading figures from the borough's political parties this week over cabinet posts and Coun Schofield confirmed she had been offered the post of deputy mayor. She discussed the party's position before the meeting with its group on Doncaster Council.

Mr Davies has yet to confirm the other members of his cabinet.

She has also urged the mayor to include others from her group including candidate for mayor Jonathan Wood and Couns Alan Jones and Cynthia Ransome.

Coun Schofield said: "We said as a group that we would support the mayor but would prefer to support the mayor on a cross-party basis, with not just Conservatives on the new cabinet.

"I think it is about time people were prepared to move forward. This council has been paralysed for a long time by people not prepared to co-operate and we have the opportunity to give this man a chance and work with him. He has won the election and that is democracy.

"I will bide my time and push for Conservative values."

It is understood some councillors are reluctant to support Mr Davies until more is known about his plans, including proposals to scrap translation services.

Community Group leader Coun Martin Williams said it was important to give the new mayor a chance and see how he performed.

Coun Garth Oxby, leader of the Alliance of Independent members, said his group would meet at the weekend to discuss what they would be doing and said he wanted to know what the English Democrats stood for as a party.

Well, for the FIRST time ever we have got a SCAB on our Council.

What have we done for Christ sake?!?!??

It's called democracy Berg, a little idea we have in the West.

What we have done, without the need for blasphemy, is either vote for Mr Davies: or failed to vote for an effective rival.

In Arthur Scargill's absence, who did you vote for Berg?

I voted for a first choice Mayor NOT a second choice Mayor and thats what we now have. What is the point in voting at all and you call that democracy, what a laugh. As for any one joining his cabinet after what Mayor Davies said on National Television about the 63 councillors "its time for them to go" and then in the next breath come and join my cabinet as I cant function without you make your mind Mayor Davies.

I very proudly voted for Labour and then I voted for Mick Maye (Ind).

Mr Davies is an English Democrat - he is not a Conservative, his son is. His son wants to get rid of the National Min Wage. What a top boy, eh?

What I am trying to highlight that since 1974 we have never had a Thatcher Tory - and they all the same underneath - helping to run this Council.

Its a sad day for Doncaster.

What was a sad day for Doncaster was the day when, having opted to create the office of an Executive Mayor, we were the only town in the country to elect a party man - boring Doncaster, Doncaster so under the grip of Labour it can't think for itself - while Hartlepool elected Hangus the Monkey, their soccer mascot, and London elected a maverick renegade (Red Ken wasn't the Labour candidate and didn't take trhe whip until later).

At least now we're in the news, for something other than "Donnygate", AIDS, appalling child services, or other Labour lagacies.

You are entitled to your view, although I think you are looking through very blinkered shades to come to a conclusion like that.

Oh well.

I think someone needs to take his blindfold off, before he talks about anyone wearing blinkers! To actually use "proud" and "Labour" in the same sentence? Somewhat against the grain of popular opinion (or should I say the wind of change that will sweep the party into post-1997 Tory style oblivion?) to say the very least...

What excellent news, the Conservative Party in Doncaster has taken their eye off the bigger picture. By supporting the new mayor they will guarantee NOT to win any MP seats in Doncaster at the General Election. I wonder what David Cameron makes of this, as Doncaster realised the mistake it has made in this mayor guy and takes revenge at the General Election against anyone and any party that prolongs the sad and disaterous result by being in the ED cabinet
