A DONCASTER optician is offering free retinal screening and hearing tests to diabetics.
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among those of working age and those with the condition should have their eyes screened at least once a year with a special camera.
Early detection and early treatment of diabetic retinopathy has been sho
wn to help prevent visual impairment, and is the best protection against the problem.
Andy Swallow, store director of Doncaster Specsavers, said: "Diabetes is a condition that needs constant management and annual eye examinations are an important part of this. We have invested in a fundus camera, a piece of equipment which is able to photograph the retina at the back of the eye.
"This technology is extremely useful in screening for retinopathy, a complication that people with diabetes are prone to. All our customers will receive this additional service at no extra cost as part of an eye test."
It is less well known that diabetics have been found to be twice as likely to suffer from hearing loss and Specsavers offers free hearing tests carried out by a hearing aid audiologist.
The store also houses a do-it-yourself state-of-the-art touch screen hearing screener so customers can test themselves.
