A FORMER Wheatley bakery could be transformed into a new business after it emerged developers have been eyeing up the site.
Lazarus Properties have bought the site of the former Oakdale Bakery on the Shaw Lane industrial estate in a deal believed to be worth around £1.4 million.

It is the latest purchase by the firm which has also taken over ownership of the historic O
deon cinema on Hall Gate.

Lazarus director Lloyd Nicholson confirmed they were planning to rent the building out as a commercial site and added there was already interest in the site from businesses interested in setting up there.

He said: "At the moment we don't consider this to be a potential redevelopment site, though of course we will listen to any ideas along those lines.

"It's a 40,000 square foot site and currently we're looking at renting it out. It would be an ideal building for a business such as a builders merchants or for a transport company."

When the bakery, which was owned by Bakesense Bakeries Ltd, closed last July 134 jobs were lost.

Bosses at the bakery, which had an £18 million turnover, blamed crumbling profit margins following soaring prices for commodities such as wheat and butter.
