WELL, our season has finally come to an end with us beating Wharfedale last Wednesday by 24 points to 17 in the Yorkshire Cup Final at Harrogate. The weather was awful and the pitch even worse.
Third Division Wharfedale started well and it took a superb effort by our pack in the second half to win the game for us. Our Director of Rugby Lynn Howells stuck with the bulk of our "fringe" players, who had done so well to get us there.

His only criticism of the team was that they had not shown Wharfedale the respect they should have done in the first half which was why we quickly dug a big hole for ourselves by playing the wrong style of rugby in the conditions.

Last Saturday, more than 200 of our supporters and friends held an end of season dinner at Castle Park which was attended by most of the 1st XV squad.

After enjoying our famous "Cow Pie", celebrations commenced with the presentation of the supporter's player of the season award to our big Kiwi lock Glen Kenworthy to go with the award he had won earlier in the week as the player's player of the season.

Kendo has a superb work ethic, he has absolutely no ego and he never has a bad game – in fact he is the Knights answer to Martin Johnson!

This weekend its all eyes to Twickenham where our sister club Doncaster Phoenix play Castleford in the EDF National Junior Vase.

Phoenix and Knights supporters alike will be travelling to the match including Martin Haythorne, our marketing and media manager, and the Castle Park mouse, Marion.

How he plans to get her in I am not sure – he did mutter something about putting her in his camera case. I am looking forward to the match and we will all be staying on afterwards to watch and cheer Wheatley Hills in their EDF National Senior Vase final against Hartpury College. What a great day for the town with two of our sides at Twickenham on the same day.

Next season commences on Saturday, August 30th when we are provisionally at home to Otley who re-appear in our league after being relegated last season.

With Leeds coming down, Otley coming up and Rotherham and ourselves still in the league, there will be a number of local derbies again. Throw in big games against the likes of Exeter, Nottingham, Cornish Pirates and Plymouth and we have an exciting season to look forward to.

Season tickets for next season are now available from the club and you can obtain a very significant discount if you buy one before the end of May. So why not call down, ring 01302 831388 or log on to www.drfc.co.uk to make your purchase.

There will be a lot to talk about during the summer months with the four home nations all travelling to the Southern Hemisphere for their summer tours.

Read about the thoughts of our director of rugby, Lynn Howells, and our backs' coach, former Irish international Justin Bishop, as the tours develop.

We will also keep you up to date with the new experimental laws that are being introduced.

We will keep you advised of how plans to restructure National Division One (our league) proceed and you will be able to meet some of our new players through this column.

And, of course, we will keep you up to date with the exploits of Marion as she seeks to start a family!
