BOWLS: ASKERN boosted their chances of avoiding being relegated for a second successive season by collecting nine points from a tie against Pontefract Cricket League Division Two leaders, Conisbrough.
All-rounder Andrew Lunn was Askern's hero with 75 and 5-37 as they moved level on points with Upper Haugh and West Bretton at the foot of the table.

Lunn and Ryan Patrick (41) guided Askern to 196-9, despite Craig Jackson's 5-40 from 13 overs and
Bob Fuller's 3-23.

Father and son Paul and Oliver Jackson, who each hit 35, put Conisbrough's reply within sight of victory. With the scores level, Lunn earned Askern a tie when he bowled Conisbrough's last man Craig Jackson.

Conisbrough are 12 points ahead of second-placed Rothwell whose game at Barnby Dun was abandoned because of rain.

Phil Decent (27) and Mark Wilkinson (23) led Barnby to 186-9. In reply, Rothwell were 30-2 from 11 overs when the weather intervened.

Promoted Sprotbrough continued their excellent season on their return to the top-flight by beating strugglers Wombwell Main.

Gary Bright (5-28 from nine overs) and Karl Buxton (2-51 from 14) limited Wombwell to 143-9.

Andy Ward hit 26, his son Ashley made 21 and Matthew Webb chipped in with 15 as Sprotbrough knocked off the runs to climb to fifth place, five points ahead of Fishlake.

Fishlake were foiled by rain in a low-scoring match at Old Sharlston.

Batting first, Fishlake were bowled out for 97, with Gary Strephan (27) top scoring.

Sharlston's reply was soon in trouble and the game was evenly poised when heavy rain ended play. Nick Morley snapped up 3-10 from six overs to reduce Sharlston to 59-6 from 28 overs.

Thurnscoe Institute's hopes of lifting the Division Three West championship were given a boost.

Second-placed Thurnscoe won by eight wickets at Streethouse A to put themselves nine points behind leaders Allerton Bywater who lost at Stainborough A.

Don Whitehurst struck 75 and Craig Simmons hit an unbeaten half-century as Thurnscoe overhauled Streethouse's 170-4.

Sykehouse, Fishlake A and Conisbrough A all lost.

Chasing Darton A's 229-4, Sykehouse had to settle for just two points when they closed on 124-9. Marc Bellwood (35) led their scoring.

Jamie Alderson (29) and Mick Robinson (3-43 from 13 overs) were best for Fishlake A in a six-wicket defeat against Old Sharlston A.

Liam Stainthorpe's battling 21 was in vain for Conisbrough A who were routed for 88 in a nine-wicket loss at Ackworth A. Ackworth's Keith Best grabbed a hat-trick in a return of 8-13.

In Division Four, Sprotbrough A were skittled 36 in a seven-wicket defeat at Sandal A.
