Spanish ayes have it

COMIC Jimmy Carol flies out to Spain on Monday – the first anniversary of his Benidorm Run. It's been a regular commute for the last year.
He says: "I do three or four days in Spain then I fly back for weekend bookings and my Sunday afternoon show on BBC Radio Sheffield."
He need never feel far from home. There are plenty of South Yorkshire folk on holiday who will be in the audience at Steptoes 2 cabaret bar, many of whom have heard him plug the place on his programme.
And there's a good sprinkling of local acts who now live and work in Spain.
Performers like Johnny Kalendar, resident compere at the Heroes bar in Finestrat, who once had a local hit with Secret Love.
You can catch Johnny singing on YouTube. Or there's former city comic Lance Edwards and Neil St John from Shirebrook.
Meatloaf impersonator Neil, who featured in the TV documentary Beniform Unpacked last year, has one arm, one leg, and performs with his Ukrainian wife Anya, a Cher sound-alike, who knocks his leg off if he doesn't behave himself!

"A lot of local people go because they know the acts who are there. It's like home from home," says Jimmy's agent Keith Chapman of CeeBee Varieties.
"There are over 20 bars and in a fortnight you won't see the same show twice."
With midweek gigs tailing off in Britain, performers like Jimmy have to follow the work overseas – with the added bonus it is in the sun.
This time of year, elderly South Yorkshire people flock to Benidorm, taking advantage of packages as low as £189 a week.
"The joke here is don't fall over in January or February because there will be no one young enough to pick you up," cracks Jimmy.
Unlike some of the other acts, who do three or four shows a night to keep afloat, he performs exclusively at Steptoes.
Jimmy says: "I don't think I could stand being there full time."
When he started Benidorm this time last year he had to fly home on the second night when he got the news his son Oliver had died in a road accident.
He's a big fan of the resort. "A lot of people knock it but I don't. They compare it with Blackpool. But Blackpool is cheap, tacky and dirty. Benidorm has the cleanest beaches and there is no fear factor on the street."
