MORE trouble for the little North Yorkshire coastal village of Staithes, where many Sheffield and South Yorkshire people rent out holiday cottages.
The tiny beach is full of rubbish and pollution, been called Britain's worst beach, and the 18-metre stretch regularly gets named and shamed by the Good Beach Guide.
Frank de Planta of the Environment Agency calls it "as beachy as my big toe."
The Diary came in for some stick after reporting a holiday there in 2001 and not being allowed on the beach without a hard hat and escort because they were strengthening the sea defences.
The holiday company forgot to mention it meant going on holiday with Bob the Builder and homeowners were angry when the Diary did.
Still, Staithes is a great place and well worth a visit, for it seems most people don't use the beach anyway.
Perhaps the nicest place to be near the sea is in the harbourfront Cod & Lobster.
It has two doors, both of which carry the same sign: "During high seas please use the other door."
