CITY artist Panni Poh Yok Loh found herself caught up in Nepal's first election and the protests over Tibet when she trekked through the Himalayas on her way to China.
"Our flight was unexpectedly stopped in Lhasa en-route to Katmandu which meant
security checks,"
"Any Dalai Lama material was confiscated and several passengers passed out in the high altitude."
Panni, from Pitsmoor, encountered burning tyres and police with batons until she escaped to the peace of the mountains, photographing a woman who had just given birth.
What do you think? Post your comments below. It turned out to be a valuable photograph because her flight to Beijing, where she was taking part in the Dream For Peace art exhibition, was delayed and her painting held up in customs.
"I had to spin into action and create a new work. Selecting the photo of the Nepali woman and newborn baby I enlarged it and had it framed," she says.
It arrived at the gallery at 6pm and the exhibition opened the next day.
What's more, the Chinese put forward a conference because she was due to leave for Britain on the planned date!
