QUINCE pie anyone? Thankyou to those lovely people of Abundance, the Sheffield free fruit project, who gave the Diary three juicy quinces at the weekend.
Two of them, together with a couple of Bramleys, went into a delicious fruit pie.
Volunteers have been picking fruit from wasteland and gardens across Sheffield and it is now available for free at the Encounters shop on Wostenholm Road, Sharrow.
"It's been mainly apples. These quinces came from someone's garden," says organiser Ruth Nutter.
But it's not all been glorious. The local plum harvest has been poor.
Local gardening guru Richard Clare reckons there's going to be a bigger demand for allotments as people think about growing their own once the credit crunch starts to bite.
Ironically, there's already a waiting list with plots lying empty.
The shop - you exchange fruit for something of your own or a food memory - is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

They turned up at the Birmingham premiere with daughters Teja and Tiani but the girls weren't the only ones excited.
"He is just as into it as everyone else. He was the one rushing to get us out of the house," she says.
