THEATRE reviews are no longer as florid as they were in 1900 but the panto at Sheffield's Lyceum that year - which was Aladdin, just like now - was as equally well received as today's.
The Sheffield History Reporter, the newsletter of Sheffield Archives and local studies department, has thumbed through back copies of local newspapers.

One panto reviewer enthused: "This blaze of splendour is like the rosy dawn, eclipsing the cold
er beauty of the starlit night and forecasting the grandeur of triumphant day."

Gosh. They liked it, then!

Bargain bye

IT wasn't only Woolies which closed on the Moor at Christmas. It was also the last hurrah for Home Bargains, the discount store which stuck it out while the rest of its section of the street was demolished around it.

It made the area look like a re-run of the Sheffield Blitz, just one lone building standing up among the rubble.

Home Bargains closed on Christmas Eve on the expiration of the lease.
