A FORMER city airman's World War II story has been turned into a children's picture book, Tail End Charlie, by his son and daughter-in-law 30 years after he died.
Teacher Des Manning was a rear gunner, or "tail end Charlie" in the RAF and told his young son stories about it.
"They came out in dribs and drabs at bathtime or during car journeys," says Mick Manning, whose wife Brita has illustrated the book.
His father died in 1977 after a heart attack, aged only 52.
"This is my way of saying thanks to him in print and passing on his stories to the grandchildren he never met," says Mick.
The book, by Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom is published by Frances Lincoln at £11.99.

Matt & Ross, described as Unlikely Lads of the East End art scene, will broadcast Incommunicado FM online from the Site Gallery on Brown Street from October 13-17.
And they'll only be using records donated from local charity shops with guests and visitors determining the playlist.
The station will run for five days from 9pm until midnight with a live audience on Friday, October 17.
