MICHAEL Vaughan should be inducted into Sheffield's Hall of Fame and have his own spot among the legends outside the Town Hall.
That's one of the views being expressed as people in the city paid tribute to the man from Sheffield who has stepped down from the England captaincy as the most successful Test skipper the country has ever had.

David Drabble, secretary and founder member of Sheffield Cricket Lovers Society and a man who knows Vaughan well, has put forward the suggestion that Vaughan - a Freeman of the City - should be selected to join those who have a special plaque outside the Town Hall to mark their national or international achievements.

"Michael did a fantastic job and is one of the best captains of all time," said Drabble.

"Under him, we have seen some of the more attractive cricket and we are all sorry this has happened.

"He is a bright lad, he has proved a very astute captain.

"This city should be proud of him and I would like to see him have a plaque outside the Town Hall to join those legends who have been inducted already."

There was a mixture of sadness and pride at Vaughan's club, Sheffield Collegiate, where his talent first came to the eye of Yorkshire.

It is the home of the Michael Vaughan Cricket Academy which nurtures young talent.

"We are all very proud of Michael's achievements and always so pleased at the support he has given the club, particularly through the youth set-up," said Collegiate stalwart Bill Croft, a vice-president and former long-serving player.

"Michael has always been more than willing to support the youngsters and his involvement has been a godsend in getting children down here on a Friday night for nets and coaching.

"He's come down at least two or three times a season and he's always there when we want him.

"He has continued to support the club during his England captaincy and helped with fund-raising dinners - he has far from forgotten us, particularly the youngsters.

"He has let us have various pieces of equipment - shirts, gloves etcetera - for display and everyone is proud of him.

Vaughan is a life member of Collegiate.
