Norman Cardwell, aged 84, collapsed after becoming embroiled in an "acrimonious" discussion at the beginning of a Maltby Town Council's meeting.
He who ran lunch clubs for pensioners at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall in Addison Road, where the meeting took place.

Acting Town Council clerk Chris McMahon said: "Everyone is devastated. We are all in complete shock. He worked so hard for other people. His partner Anne Thorpe was sitting next to him when it happened and screamed out. As you would expect she is devastated."

Mr Cardwell was a retired tool factory worker and trade unionist.
