One of the best-loved figures in South Yorkshire journalism has died at the age of 73.
Peter Harvey entertained readers with his whimsical columns in the Sheffield Telegraph and The Star for more than 50 years.

He continued to write until shortly before his death on Friday May 16.

Peter was well-known as an author and was steeped in Sheffield and its history.

Lifelong friend Stuart Machin who went to school with Peter and worked with him at both the Morning Telegraph and The Star, hailed him as an out-and-out Sheffielder and consummate professional whose humour never deserted him.

Peter had many fans in the city and across the world. If you enjoyed his work and would like to pay tribute to him please leave a message below.

Alan Biggs,

Sheffield 17/05/2008 13:50:14
As an avid reader of Peter Harvey's columns, I'm very sad to hear of his passing. I would often find his sidelong look at ordinary subjects so amusing - and so true - that I would read them aloud to my wife during an evening in front of the box. As a matter of fact - and this is something that isn't commonly known - I once tried to "recruit" Peter during my time as sports editor of Radio Hallam. I knew he was a sports fan and it struck me that his wit and whimsy could transfer into a sort of occasional column of the airwaves. Peter sounded very flattered to be approached and, after talking things through, very modestly declined. For me, that was a pity but he was jealously guarded by Sheffield Newspapers and rightly so. Radio's loss continued to be the Star's gain and I would always hunt out his column. Despite being in the same business, this was the only conversation I had with Peter - and yet through his writings I felt I really knew him and his family. To them, I would like to offer sincere condolences.

I became acquainted with Peter during my time at Sheffield Newspapers (1966-89) and since then our paths have crossed quite frequently either on the bus into the city or at Bramall lane, he was never any different, a lovely man who liked a chat and was always pleased to see you, or give you a friendly wave, I like many more will sadly miss him.
