Chris Ratcliffe,

In my former role as lead commissioner for cardiac services, I worked with Walter for a number of years in the North Trent Cardiac Network. As well as being a skilled and innovative clinician, Walter was a great leader with strong vision and the ability to see all sides of a debate. His tragic and untimely death is a great loss to the National Health Service and will be felt across the whole of South Yorkshire and beyond.

Though I hadn't met Kathy, I know she was equally well respected. This is a terrible loss for their children and my deepest sympathies are with them.

I met Kathy Phipps whilst working on a sex education project. She was gentle, very kind, assertive and full of character and fun, working with her was a joy. I met Walter as a result of work on heart disease. Walter and Kathy became good friends to my wife and I. They both appeared in a short film for the NHS alliance about my company. Walter spoke without notes or pausing for several minutes and not a single word was wasted, fluent, precise and everything I could have asked for in a single take. Before he was filmed he asked me if there was anything I would like him to say in the piece; I said that I didn't feel I should tell him what to say. He was the sort of guy who would ask that kind of question. I will miss them both and my heart goes out to Jamie and his sisters.

I am tremendously saddened to hear this news. I worked for a short space of time with Walter when he first came to Barnsley and the scale of his contribution to cardiac services, research and the hospital at large simply cannot be underestimated. My heart goes out to the children.

We are devastated to hear of the tragic deaths of Kathy and Walter. We have known them since our son Tom and Jamie started school together 12 years ago. Two truly lovely people, perfectly matched and with so much to give. Kathy was also my parents doctor; so kind, patient and understanding.Jamie, Emily and Olivia we are thinking of you. x

Kathy Phipps was my GP for the best part of ten years - and much more than that. In a world which often seems dumbed down and dominated by hierarchies, she assumed that I was an intelligent adult, and never patronised me. I know from our conversations that she believed passionately in her role as educator and mentor, as well as healer. She was an inspiration to me and a role model of the rarest quality - a strong woman, a heart-full mother, her no-nonsense compassion will be sorrowfully missed. She is a loss to the world.

Very sad news concerning two good colleagues. They both made a huge difference to so many lives of patients and colleagues alike. Having worked with Walter as part of the cardiology team it is apparent how much his teaching and his character will be missed by all. Thoughts and condolences go to their three children and their family. May Kathy and Walter both rest in peace.

Dr Trefor Roscoe,

Sheffield 02/04/2008 18:46:59
I worked with Kathy on several occasions on health promotion projects and our paths crossed at conferences and meetings.

With a group of colleagues we had a wonderful evening at a conference dinner only a few weeks ago.

Her death will be a great loss to medical education in South Yorkshire.
