The best at his position of his era, and ony kept out of the england side for years because of the Establishment's determination to let someone called Wright 'win' 100 caps. for the uninitiated, Billy Wright was the Beckham of his generation.

Coming from the other end of town at 63 years of age I had a respect for him, a hard honest player, approachable off the pitch, truely a giant of a man, he would have walked into either Chelsea or Mancester Uniteds current teams.

As a young wednesdayite who was taken to watch Joe Shaws testimnial with Stan Mathews and the others who wanted to pay their respects to a top professional. I have always respected him as a player. He was one of the first ball playing centre halves and along with Peter Swan would have made a great England pairing.
