Workers set to cycle the length of the country in End to End challenge

WORKERS from a building maintenance firm are parking up their vans and getting on two wheels to help three local charities.
Employees from Kier Sheffield, based on Manor Lane, are holding a follow-up event to a ride from Sheffield to Cleethorpes in 2009 and a sponsored coast-to-coast bike ride last year.
This time they are cycling almost 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
They hope the End To End ride will raise £10,000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, the Sheffield Autistic Society and Motor Neurone Disease Association – £3,000 more than last year’s fundraising total.
The cyclists will depart John O’Groats on May 28. They have been training together for months in preparation for the gruelling ride, which will see them cycling almost 100 miles a day.
Saddling up are Kier staff Simon Bullen, Darren Crouch, Scott Murray, John Blackwell, Mark Hall and Dave Cooper, plus guests Tony Perry, Martin Colley, Bill Stubbins, Julie Bullen, Simon Hughes, Anthony Derbyshire and Judy Bird.
Mr Bullen, Kier Sheffield regional managing director, said: “My team never shies away from a challenge. This latest expedition is set to be our greatest adventure yet. We are asking anyone who can donate to visit our Just Giving page and do their bit to support us and these worthwhile causes.
“Thinking what good the donations will do to help people from across Sheffield makes those gruelling uphill sections manageable. A big thanks too to all our sponsors who have helped make this challenge possible.”
The End to End bike ride will be further supported by a sponsored cycle on fixed bikes at Ponds Forge on June 3, where teams from the company and other Sheffield firms will battle it out to exceed the distance of the main ride in a day.
The winning team will receive a trophy.
Motor Neurone Disease Association fundraising director, Douglas Graham, said: “MND is a truly devastating disease, not just for the person diagnosed but the whole family. “The money raised from the End to End bike ride and the supporting event on June 3 will go towards vital work and research into devastating illnesses which affect people’s lives in Sheffield every day.”
